It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Ryan Massey, a beloved member of the Columbia, Tennessee, community and a distinguished alumnus of Columbia Academy’s Class of 2023. John’s life, though tragically cut short, was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his community, and his faith.
Born and raised in Columbia, John was the cherished son of Ryan Massey and his wife Angie. He was the grandson of Debbie and John Massey, who have been long-standing residents of Columbia. John’s family roots in the area run deep, with his great-grandmother, Joyce Morton Crowe, having been a respected member of the community until her passing in March 2024.
John’s academic journey was distinguished by his graduation from Columbia Academy in 2023. During his time at the academy, he was known for his academic excellence, leadership qualities, and active participation in various extracurricular activities. His peers and teachers remember him as a diligent student with a passion for learning and a heart for service.
Beyond his academic pursuits, John was deeply involved in his local church community. He was an active member of Southgate Church of Christ, where he participated in youth group activities, community service projects, and mission trips. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding his actions and interactions with others.
John’s commitment to service extended beyond his church involvement. He was passionate about giving back to his community and volunteered with several local organizations. His compassionate nature and willingness to help others left a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
In his personal life, John was known for his love of sports, particularly soccer and basketball. He was an avid supporter of local teams and enjoyed playing in community leagues. His teammates recall his sportsmanship, dedication, and the camaraderie he fostered both on and off the field.
Family was central to John’s life. He shared a close bond with his parents, Ryan and Angie, and was a loving brother to his siblings. His grandparents, Debbie and John Massey, played a significant role in his upbringing, instilling in him the values of integrity, kindness, and perseverance.
