The West Hancock girls basketball team has played two games on neutral courts this season against the Pittsfield Lady Saukees, a competitive opponent led by freshman guard Reese Ramsey.
The Titans struggled in both matchups, falling to Pittsfield each time, with Ramsey proving to be a key factor in her team’s victories. Her skill and leadership on the court made her a standout player, even as a freshman, and her contributions were instrumental in Pittsfield’s success.
However, tragedy struck on Tuesday night when a devastating car accident occurred on one of the highways near Pike County. The accident involved three members of the Pittsfield girls basketball team, including Reese Ramsey.
The young athlete, whose talent and energy had made a significant impact in her first year of high school basketball, tragically lost her life in the crash. The other two players who were involved in the accident sustained serious injuries and were airlifted to regional hospitals for urgent medical care.
The news of Ramsey’s passing sent shockwaves through the Pittsfield community and beyond. Her death represents an unimaginable loss for her family, friends, teammates, and classmates. A bright young athlete with a promising future, Ramsey was not only known for her abilities on the basketball court but also for her spirit, dedication, and determination.
Pikeland School District Superintendent Todd Fox released a heartfelt statement on the district’s Facebook page, expressing the sorrow and grief felt throughout the school community.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share devastating news with you about the sudden and tragic passing of one of our students, Reese Ramsey. There are no words that can fully express the sorrow and pain we feel as a school community,” Fox stated.
He went on to encourage the community to keep Ramsey’s family, the injured students, and all those affected in their thoughts and prayers. His message underscored the unity and support that the school family must embrace during such a heartbreaking time.
As news of Ramsey’s passing spread, messages of condolences and support poured in from neighboring schools, sports teams, and community members. The West Hancock girls basketball team, having faced Ramsey and the Lady Saukees twice this season, expressed their sympathies, recognizing the impact she had both as a competitor and as a person. Coaches, players, and fans from both teams reflected on the moments they shared on the court, now cherishing the memories of a talented young player gone too soon.
