Gone Too Soon, Never Forgotten: 864 Elite Mourns the Heartbreaking Loss of Payce Chappell
SPARTANBURG, SC — A wave of grief has swept through the 864 Elite Volleyball Club and beyond as the community mourns the tragic and untimely passing of Payce Chappell, a beloved athlete, teammate, and friend. Payce died on July 1, 2025, following a sudden and severe medical emergency that left those who knew her stunned and heartbroken.
At just 16 years old, Payce had already made an unforgettable mark—not just with her remarkable athletic talent, but with a radiant spirit that brought light into every room she entered. Known for her contagious smile, boundless energy, and fierce determination, Payce was more than a rising star in volleyball—she was the heart of the 864 Elite family.
“She wasn’t just a teammate—she was a spark,” said her coach through tears. “Payce inspired everyone around her to push harder, love deeper, and live fuller. We’ve lost a sister, a warrior, and a piece of our soul.”
Payce’s passion for volleyball was matched only by the way she uplifted others. Whether on the court or in the classroom, she was known for encouraging words, her sense of humor, and a spirit that could never be dimmed. Coaches describe her as a “once-in-a-generation” kind of player—not only because of her talent, but because of her character.
Outside of sports, Payce was deeply rooted in her community. Her peers recall how she made every person feel seen, heard, and valued. Teachers called her a leader in the making, and friends say her energy “felt like sunshine.”
In the wake of her sudden passing, messages of love and remembrance have poured in from all over the country. Fellow volleyball teams, coaches, and families have shared stories of Payce’s sportsmanship, kindness, and strength—reminding the world of how many hearts she touched in her short time.
A vigil held Tuesday night at the 864 Elite training facility was filled with candles, jerseys, flowers, and tears. As hundreds gathered, they wore her number and carried signs reading “Play for Payce” and “Forever Elite.”
“It’s unimaginable to think about walking into that gym and not hearing her laughter,” said one of her teammates. “But we’ll carry her memory with us into every game. Every serve. Every set. She’ll always be with us.”
In honor of Payce, the 864 Elite Volleyball Club has announced the launch of the Payce Chappell Legacy Scholarship, aimed at supporting young athletes who embody the heart, hustle, and humanity Payce exemplified every day.
As the Chappell family, the volleyball community, and friends around the country try to navigate the pain of such a devastating loss, one thing is certain: Payce’s legacy will live on in every serve, every cheer, and every heart she touched.
Rest in power, Payce. You were—and will always be—the soul of the game.
