Zion Mourns a Bright Light: James ‘Pete’ Pantel III Dies at 35, Leaves Legacy of Love

ZION, ILLINOIS — With profound sorrow and heavy hearts, the community of Zion says goodbye to James Richard Pete” Pantel III, who passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, at the age of 35, surrounded by those who loved him most.

Known to many simply as “Pete,” he was a son, brother, uncle, friend — and a bright light in every life he touched. Though his time on earth was far too short, his impact will ripple through the lives of those who knew him for years to come.

Pete’s passing has left a deep void in the hearts of family and friends who now must navigate life without his easy smile, infectious laugh, and unwavering kindness. He was the kind of person who could walk into any room and make it feel like home — someone who made people feel heard, seen, and valued.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, remembered not just for what he did, but for who he was — a man with a generous spirit, a heart full of compassion, and a fierce loyalty to those he held dear.

“Pete didn’t just show up — he showed up with all of his heart,” said one of his closest friends. “He never let you down. If you needed him, he was there — no questions asked.”

Born and raised in Zion, Illinois, Pete was known throughout the community for his warmth, his work ethic, and the way he brought people together. Whether it was a family barbecue, a late-night phone call, or a helping hand during hard times, Pete was the one everyone could count on.

His passions were simple but rich — he loved music, good food, spontaneous road trips, and most of all, making memories with the people he loved. He lived fully, laughed loudly, and loved deeply — and those memories now serve as the treasures his family will hold onto in the days to come.

As the news of his passing spreads, tributes are pouring in from near and far. From childhood friends to coworkers, neighbors to extended family — the common thread is clear: Pete made life better just by being in it.

Funeral and memorial service arrangements are currently being made and will be shared with the community in the coming days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a local mental health or addiction support organization, causes close to Pete’s heart.

Though his physical presence is gone, his spirit lives on in every smile he gave, every hug he offered, and every life he touched.

Rest peacefully, James “Pete” Pantel III.
You may be gone from this world, but your light will never fade.
